Microsoft has just announced the release of Windows 10. However, that presents the question, “Why 10?” Many people do not understand the Microsoft’s naming system and the jump from 8.1 to 10.

04:00 — Mobilus
Varvara talks modular phones and how they will affect consumers’ experiences when purchasing a smartphone. The concept has many pros and cons such as the flexibility to build a phone with the exact specifications you want/need, but could also break due if the pieces don’t integrate well with one another, or the software.

16:37 — Term•ology
Material design is a visual language for users that synthesizes the classic principles of good design and the innovation and possibility of technology and science.

18:04 — Dev-Box
Mike discusses the different car interfaces that are being announced/released, but points out that Microsoft has some catching up to do if they want to compete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. With these new interfaces coming to the market, Mike points out that responsive design and adaptive design are not the same and that the new car interfaces are excellent examples of adaptive design.

Phones aren’t supposed to bend are they? The new iPhone does! Jaron talks about the newly released iPhone 6s and how or if ‘bendgate’ is going to affect consumers decision to purchase Apple’s latest product.

03:46 — In Review
After announcing the Apple watch in their keynote session, smartwatches are being talked everywhere, including Studio 526m. Jaron compares the Apple Watch to other smartwatches that are being announced such as the Moto360 and Android Wear, and discusses the changes to UX design that the new technology presents, including features that are or are not practical for a smartwatch.

13:44 — Term•ology
Lapability is the ability and measurement as per the ease of use of a device on one's lap. These devices can include laptops and tablets, and can help be defined by asking if they function well and are comfortable when sitting on a user’s lap.

15:04 — Chatter
With U2 and Apple announcing that all iTunes users will be receiving the newest U2 album for free, many people are upset that Apple is taking the liberty to “download something onto their device without permission.” However, many people do not understand that although the music appears in their account, they still have to go through the process of downloading the album to their devices. Mike talks about how user experience designers can learn from this situation by asking the question, “Are we being clear in our designs?” and provide options to our audience.

20:39 — Readings
In this segment, Mike talks about two books that every designer should have in their personal library. He explains why every designer should consult the book “Universal Principles of Design” on a regular basis, because it helps guarantee that there is intention behind a design. Microsoft has announced that their CEO, Steve Ballmer, will be leaving the company in the next year. They have recently acquired Nokia, but during his time leading the company, Microsoft has lost over $300 billion. It will be interesting to see what affect this change in leadership will have on the company and the products they put out.

03:57 — In Review
Mike reviews the Blazar speakers, by Beacon. He finds that they charge quickly, the Bluetooth connection works well, and the overall sound quality is good. Although they are about the same price as the competition, he determines that they are a great product for for the price, and recommends that students purchase they due to their quality and portability.

11:57 — Term•ology

Big things are coming from Google. With the latest release of the Nexus 5, featuring Android KitKat competing with their own MotoX, as well as talk of car interfaces and no-touch voice commands, they are pushing towards meeting or beating Apple products.

04:23 — Show Introduction

12:04 — Term•ology
Connected media is mobile fragmented and endlessly malleable technology, or content, that makes everyone a media creator, as well as a consumer. This includes social media posts and Flipboard. Because of this, it is important that we ask ourselves if we are creating connected media when we post to different platforms.

13:32 — Chatter
After reading an article arguing that tablet magazines are bound to fail, Mike gets worked up about the relevance and future of magazine apps for tablets. Although the article suggests that they are outdated media products and digital replicas of print magazines, Mike argues that the numbers presented are not realistic.
